What are your career goals? Learn, grow and move up in the organization I am in (Access Family Care). What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Traveling, spending time with kids and family. Who do you admire? Why? Grandmother. She works very hard. Is very supportive and will do anything for her family.

I chose WTI based on the job placement success rate. I knew that WTI would be the institution that would give me the proper training to succeed in the field of my choice. What did you enjoy most about WTI? Why? The entire staff, especially financial aid and career services. Instructors are extremely knowledgeable about all of the material. The administration was outstanding in assisting me with any obstacle I came across. What are your career goals? One of my long term goals are to become a project manager. I’m currently a controls engineer and this field is constantly growing. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I have a big family – a wife and six kids, so I enjoy playing with my children and spending quality time with my family. Who do you admire? Why? I admire Mr. Larry Asher. He is a member of the advisory board at WTI. I remember sitting down with Mr. Asher for the first time as he started to ask me questions about my training. I knew that I had chosen the right institution for my training. With my experience and training from WTI I was able to jump into a field I had no idea existed. Mr. Asher has been extremely helpful through my journey and still continues to advise me through my career choices. I would also recognize my wife for all the dedication and long nights of school that we went through. It wasn’t just a journey for me but for my family as well. Our family has benefitted from these career changes and I know others can as well when attending WTI.
Interview with WTI Graduate, Jacob Engle – CTNA Program-Interview with WTI Graduate, Jacob Engle – CTNA Program Jacob Engle is a 2011 graduate from WTI Joplin’s Computer Technology & Network Administration program. Jacob began his IT career as a GPS Technician in the Kansas area and shortly after was hired by Legget & Platt, Inc. for their IT department. Recently Jacob was offered a position as a Senior Administrator for Pittsburg State University (PSU). Jacob has continued to excel in his IT career. Why did you choose the program you did? I liked that there was room to grow in the field. You can keep advancing yourself with certifications and positions. What did you enjoy most about WTI? Why? I enjoyed the instructors the most. They were great! They did a lot of hands on teaching; we would talk about it and then actually do it. You were able to see how it was supposed to work. They also pushed you to get certified because they knew you would need it in the real world. What are your career goals? The great thing is that I have already achieved my first goal of being a Senior Administrator and have now set a new goal of being the Director of an IT department or IT infrastructure. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I am an outdoorsman so I enjoy hunting and riding horses. I also enjoy visiting St. Louis. Who do you admire? Why? My Grandpa, he taught me to keep moving forward, keep working and work hard no matter what. He also told me what to expect when I did go out and start working.

Why did you choose the Medical Assistant program? I wanted to better my life. I have always wanted to be in the medical field, to follow in my mother’s footsteps, and I have always enjoyed helping people and felt that this was a career that I could do that. What did you enjoy most about WTI? Why? I loved the hands on experience. I am the type of person that learns better with applying my learning with hands on application. What are your career goals? I would eventually like to go back to school to be an RN. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Spend time with my family, especially my daughter Callie. Who do you admire? Why? My mother – she raised two children on her own while going to school and working full-time. She has always supported my brother and I and pushed us towards our goals. Kennedi says, “While at WTI, the hands on experience which was taught by the instructors, were valuable tools that I could use during my externship and later on after being hired by my externship site. During my two month employment, I have already acquired my DATIA certification along with my breath/alcohol certification. I loved the whole experience at WTI!”
Interview with WTI Graduate, Trisha Kloeppel-Interview with WTI Graduate, Trisha Kloeppel “Why did you choose the program you did?” “I originally wanted to pursue a career as a mortician but decided first to get some education in the medical field and was drawn to WTI because of the one year medical programs. I initially thought about the medical assistant program but was drawn to the pharmacy technician field mainly because of the math (which I love). I enjoyed the classroom atmosphere, which I felt was fun while still learning. The length and cost of the program appealed to me as well, which would enable me to achieve my goals.” “What did you enjoy most about WTI? Why?” “The Staff! I felt that they were all warm and welcoming, and I felt like I belonged at WTI. They truly care about the students. When I was going through some personal issues, I thought about quitting but the staff discussed with me the importance of staying in school and made me feel that I could accomplish my goals with hard work and determination.” “What are your career goals?” “Right now I plan on staying at CVS Pharmacy. I feel like somewhat of a pioneer here as I assisted in setting up not only the pharmacy, but the entire store before opening this past fall. I have also thought that maybe in the future, I would like to work in an institutional pharmacy (hospital setting) and then eventually going back to school to achieve my initial goal of becoming a mortician.” “What do you enjoy in your free time?” “Spending time with my fiancé and taking care of our nine animals (six cats and three dogs), some of which we rescued. Other than that, I enjoy watching movies.” “Who do you admire? Why?” “My WTI pharmacy instructor, Isa Greenwood. I felt that she supported me during my time at WTI even though, at times, she didn’t agree with some of the decisions I made. I felt loved and that she honestly cared.” “I felt that the classroom lab was a great practice for that on-the-job training. Working in both labs was a great experience and prepared me for what I am doing now. I also felt that the experience that my instructor had in the pharmacy field was a great addition to the classroom and she was able to explain why things are done the way they are. Time management tips for students from Ben Franklin-Time management tips for students from Ben Franklin One of the biggest pitfalls students face is effective time management. This is particularly true for students who balance school with work and family obligations. The biggest enemy to effective time management is procrastination. Ben Franklin was able to account for nearly every minute of his day. As a postmaster, newspaperman, diplomat, writer and inventor (among other pursuits), Mr. Franklin was notorious for having many irons in the fire. He was meticulous about how he spent his day. Many quotes have been attributed to Mr. Franklin that can be applied to the student’s pursuit of effective time management. “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” If you are finding yourself avoiding what you need to do, you’re not alone. Procrastination is normal and almost everyone does it. Usually we do it because we’re don’t want to do a task that is either challenging or unpleasant, or we simply would rather be doing something else with our time. “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” Make a to-do list every day. It’s best to make it the night before, but not so late that you lose rest worrying about what you need to accomplish. It allows you to prioritize what you need to accomplish for each day. And, yes, schedule time for yourself. Franklin’s quote is most relevant. “Lost time is never found again.” Use even the smallest free time to do something. If you finish something early, keep your work with you. This usually isn’t a problem in today’s world of super-connectivity, with easy access to laptops, tablets and smartphones. If you find yourself with extra time, use it to knock out a task. Ben said it best. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Schedule time to study, even if you don’t have a test or anything that’s due the next day, set aside time to study when you shut off your phone, don’t respond to email, and are able to concentrate. “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Get enough rest.When you have work, school and family obligations, you may sacrifice normal sleep patterns. Our brains require sleep to operate at peak efficiency. “Lose no time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.” Take a realistic look at how you spend your time each day to determine what causes you to procrastinate – surfing, social media, chatting with co-workers – and either limit yourself or cut it out completely. Getting the education you need to help you succeed in your career path is a big commitment, and a big step towards changing your life for the better. Remember what Ben said: ”When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.”

When you are looking for a job it is important to highlight your skills and sell yourself. Your resume should have both hard skills and soft skills on it. Hard skills are tangible measurable skills that you have. These include things like typing, operating machinery, experience gained, and a degree or certificate earned. You should put your hard skills on your resume, but in this job market you need more than that to set yourself apart. Soft skills are skills that cannot be measured. They are generally attributes or a part of your character. Most positions you apply for have several other candidates who are also applying. These soft skills could help set you apart from those other candidates. Strong Work Ethic- A person can have a bunch of concrete hard skills and no work ethic and they are worthless to a company. An employer doesn’t want to have employees with no work ethic. On the other hand, you may not have as many hard skills as that candidate, but if you are a hard worker and willing to learn you could be more valuable to that employer. Always be willing to emphasize your soft skills and talk about how they will apply to the position you are interviewing for. Positive attitude- This is a skill that might seem simple, but it is actually quite significant. Regardless of what field you work in, if you can maintain a positive attitude even when work gets tough you are an asset to your team. Team player- Not everyone works well on teams. If this is a skill you should speak to it on your resume and in interviews. As with any skill you list on your resume, make sure you can back it up with some examples. Talk about a time you worked with a team and were successful. These are just a few soft skills that can help set you apart from other candidates when looking for a job. According to AOLjobs.com, the top ten soft skills employers are looking for are, strong work ethic, positive attitude, good communication skills, time management abilities, problem solving skills, acting as a team player, self-confidence, ability to accept criticism, flexibility, and ability to work under pressure. However, it is important to remember that you are just one person, and nobody is perfect. Companies want to see someone who is authentic, so be yourself! Think about the skills you possess and be honest about your weaknesses.

Some of the daily tasks of those in the HVACR field include using blue prints to install, inspect, maintain and repair HVACR systems. Another benefit of working in this field is that the work requires you to travel from place to place. If you do not want to sit in one building all day from eight to five, HVACR offers you more movement and variety of work. In previous WTI blogs we have talked about mistakes to avoid during an interview and questions to ask during an interview, but what happens after the interview? Here are three ways to follow up with your interviewer to leave one last positive impression. Send a thank you note. After every interview you should follow up with a thank you note. You should send an e-mail thanking the employer within 24 hours of the interview. Some people also send actual thank you cards through the mail. Whichever option you choose, the content in the note should be the same. Thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. Remind them of something that was discussed in the interview. Remind them why you are a great candidate for the position. For example, “Mr. Smith, thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. I was really excited to hear that the medical assisting position would give me the opportunity to work directly with patients as well as the nursing staff. I believe my experience working in a nursing home for the past year has given me the skills I need to be successful in the position and I look forward to hearing from you soon.” Call to inquire about the position. Before an interview is over, ask the interviewer if there is a timeline for when a candidate will be selected for the position.
